When was umbrella made?

Umbrella is one of the most useful items that makes our life easier and more comfortable. When humans get rid of the Stone Age, the advances in technology and culture has allowed our ancestors to improve their lifestyle, change and expand habitat. The umbrella is one of the most effective things to protect people from the sun and rain, we have improved a lot through every decade.

According to historical records, the first place where used umbrellas to protect from the sun was Ancient Egypt around 3500 years ago. At that time, the first form of umbrellas was extremely rudimentary palm leaves tied to a stick. Then, umbrallas in Egypt slowly evolved into an object used by the nobility, royal members and leaders.

Umbrellas of ancient Egypt

Some hieroglyphic paintings found in the ruins of Ancient Egypt depicting the lives of the royal family and nobles world, archaeologists saw in these images all people with umbrellas on their heads. Ancient Assyrian nation at that time even enforced a rule that only the King had the right to use umbrella.

Because desert was the environment of North Africa, the Middle East, Egypt and Assyria, there was no need for waterproof when creating umbrellas. This tradition was spread throughout the region, and government leaders in Siam and Burma had used umbrellas having from 8 to 24 layers.

Umbrellas of aristocracy in 15th - 16th centuries

Throughout the millennium BC, umbrellas started appearing in Ancient Greece and Rome. In the two countries, umbrella was seen as a luxury accessory for women. History recorded that in both Greek and Roman, collapsible umbrellas had appeared and they were used not by the noblewomen but by the servants and slaves. Umbrellas were also pinned on carriages and horses. At that time, men thought umbrellas were items dedicated to women like wearing high heels today.

The brightest age of umbrellas

After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, the use of umbrellas almost completely disappeared in Europe. Until the Renaissance, umbrellas were popular again and used by nobility and imperial of France, Italy and England in the late 16th, 17th century. At that time, the umbrellas were made from silk or other expensive materials and did not provide good and long protection in the rain, but the overall shape and design of them (processed with advanced technology  allowing umbrellas for opening and closing easily) were similar to umbrellas used by women of the Roman world and Greece in the 4th century BC.

The application of umbrella in human life

A few decades later, the use of umbrellas slowly spread across Europe and to North America, but traditionally only used for women. This finally changed when Mr. Jonas Hanway - founder of Magdalen hospital in England, with all determination, he dared to appear in front of all the crowds and always used umbrella on all occasions he appeared. At first, his actions were ridiculed very much, but then Bristish men finally accepted the use of the umbrella in 1790 when the umbrella became heavier and stronger produced and promoted.

The next decade passed, umbrellas gradually accepted by everyone as a daily widgets and at the same time there were more technological progress allowed the creation of modern umbrellas. The most notable inventions of the umbrella were from Hans Haupt in creating pocket umbrella of Bradford in 1928 and from E Philips who invented the folding mechanism for the umbrella. Then, umbrellas were also used in the religious ceremonies of the Church (which became part of the Pope’s program of and costumes) and Oriental Orthodox Churches even used umbrellas to honor important or religious people.

In short, the development of umbrella producing technique has been finalized till today with many patents are filed each year. For example, hurricane umbrella (can stand the wind speed up tp 100km/h without being upside down), whole body cover umbrella, umbrella with coffee holding handle or 2 ways automatic umbrella. And nowadays, umbrellas have been used frequently, especially promotion umbrella with brand logo printed and to gift customers.
