It was on working time. The Marketing room was silent, everyone focused on work. But the boss room had some loud noises of arguement. I ran through to see what was happening.
- This project is your child, you have the responsibility to care for and nurture it to grow up! Why did you leave it wilted?
- I also tried so much for it.
- Not yet. I really have not seen your dedication to the job, trying is not enough. I assigned full responsibility for you because I believed in you. If you can not do it, then we will always stop at this level only. Do you want this?
These days, I would hear boss and Sally had the heated debates like that, accompanied by tears, sighs, silences almost to apnea. Nearly all new employees would have to undergo such time. They had to hear boss scolded, feedback on the effect of the job and threaten. There are "hard cases", both the employer and employee in the company had to stay to 10 pm. But after that scolded time, boss kept offering solutions for every small error, and then commenting, re-fixing, watching the progressive track of each employee. I wonder why my boss so be patient to make soldiers better?
Then what if soldier become better, would they leave boss? Or may they are the people who will replace our sitting position? Soldier's better than boss, how to manage, how reassuring?
I think the boss is also afraid of the good soldier, because of these reasons. But Saxa need them being better, because they are the people who make this company grow. I still remember, boss used to say to employees that: "I need you. Saxa need you ", that we need every employee as a key on the computer keyboard, without any keys, completely type out an A4 page is “really incredible ". And indeed, after tearful "startup" stage, many employees have become a lot better. Surely you still remember Hanah - Best Sales of Saxa, or Mandy - Expert of conversation. They also suffered the "bullying" of boss many times when they are newbie, but now they are proud employees of Saxa .
There is a rule called "corks", if your boss is the best, the company can only grow as much as the ability of the boss. But if the company has a whole team better than the boss, the potential will be much higher. Boss always has the choice to grow the company to the "cork" and then stopped or blasted "cork" to blow developmental energy. Perhaps, every boss always has fear that their employees will be better than them. But between fear that make company stop at a person's capacity, and making the company further develop by a good team, surely leader will choose to wing for the staff, each and everyone, to reach further. We also hope that there will be more bosses will agree with this approach so that they could make up much talent together, bursting "capability cork" to make company stronger.
