- What’s your dream, Sally?
- I want to be a good PR executive. At lease, I have to write faster and know how to implement Saxa marketing projects better.
- Oh, I thought you wanted to be a chief at five-star hotel or a knitting genius. Is that how you improve yourself?
- …
I felt so ashamed after talking to her. This was at lunchbreak last week. And that’s how my boss always is. Even when we just chit-chat or have a serious talk, joke around or have a deep presentation, she always can make me stop my silly smiles immediately and start thinking more like that.
I had to spend 15 minutes to defend myself that my “relax” schedule at home is completely relaxing and useful like knitting will keep me patient or I can cook for my teammates when we go picnic. But then, I was so embarrassed that I have ever focused on self-training seriously.
I like PR. I even make a list of things I have to learn about it. But I ever do any of them. I cannot read document or join PR events during weekdays. However, at weekends when I have free time, I just follow my hobbies and after finishing them, I go to bed. As time passes by, I realize my work has not been improved at all and I have not made any perfect product.
Right then I feel disappointed about myself, because of that, I keep following those hobbies to release stress. That makes me run around in a silly circle.
Why do I have to? If I want to be good copywriter who can write meaningful and deep messages, to be a influential presenter or an excellent marketer, I should have replaced all of those by reading books, joining conferences, and thousand hours of practising writing and brainstorming.
Every single thing you are doing today, every hobby and knowledge you’ve got will create a different version of you tomorrow. Malcolm Gladwell said, if someone spends enough 10.000 practice hours, they can become a “genius” in the field they want. Now I know the recipe of no longer being upset about myself is quite simple. Whoever you want to be, let live and practise in these ways.
